What brand(s) do you use?
I use only high quality, professional level cosmetic and skin care products in my kit. I am constantly researching and experimenting with new products to bring you the best. Currently, my main brands for cosmetics are Serenity + Scott ( paraben, gluten and cruelty free), The Balm, Mountains to Sea, MAC, Mehron, Ben Nye, Dinair, Graftobian, Derma e, and Makeup Forever. I carry Serenity + Scott, The Balm, and Mountains to Sea skincare at the studio.
What are the benefits of airbrush makeup?
Airbrush makeup is lightweight, exceptionally long-wearing, and flawless. I prefer hand-applying eye makeup for most work, but airbrush foundation is my preferred application for event makeup like weddings and prom. The amount of coverage can easily be adjusted, as well as the color. Being able to blend colors on demand means that everyone gets a customized match to their skin. I use airbrush makeup for underwater shoots with Keith Dixon Studios, which gives you an idea of how well it wears. Easy to remove when you’re ready, and gentle to the skin make it ideal for special events.
Why hire a makeup artist?
Makeup artists spend years honing their skill set, keeping up on the latest trends and techniques, and researching products. We are trained to utilize makeup in the best manner possible for a variety of needs, including photography, event, editorial, and film. When you hire a makeup artist, you are putting years of education, thousands of dollars of tools and supplies, and mountains of knowledge at your disposal. All of that combined effort to bring you the look you want, for special events…often some of the most important occasions of your life. You also have the advantage of being cared for, the luxury of on-location services, and the peace-of-mind that comes with hiring a professional. I have the advantage of photography knowledge and working with a photographer daily, which helps me understand how all products translate in a variety of lighting situations.
How can I learn more about doing makeup on myself or others?
I offer a variety of classes and lessons for all levels and budgets. Private lessons are a great place to start for very focused learning, and a chance to learn how to use your own products and tools better. Day and evening classes are offered up throughout the year (mostly winter when we aren’t traveling as much) for very reasonable prices at the studio. These usually consist of smaller groups of people, and are demonstration style classes so you can take notes. My makeup Intensives are geared for those who want to learn how to be makeup artists themselves (or for people who truly love the art of makeup and want to hone their skills thoroughly) and spend more time in class over several days or weeks. Keep up with the latest offerings by subscribing to Faces by Ren events on Facebook, or at the blog.
